About

Rooted Justice Collaborative ("RJC") began as a community training session on Restorative Justice as an anti-racist practice. Years later, Robyn and Aviance have expanded this practice to communities, organizations and schools to offer trainings, workshops and community conversations on justice, equity, and restorative practice.

Aviance Brown

Aviance Brown is a movement lawyer, RJ practitioner and law professor that studies the intersection between race and restorative practices. Her passion for RJ began for her as a criminal defense attorney, when she realized that despite her valiant advocacy for her clients, there was a deeply entrenched punitive system that was avidly working against so many of the people in the courtroom.  Aviance teaches practitioners how to do their work with a racial equity lens and emphasizes the importance of community care in sustainable equity work. She has trained court actors, law enforcement officials, faith leaders and community organizations on the history of race and racism, given them tools to effectively question their practices and to make them more community oriented. Aviance is a wife and mom to a rambunctious toddler and a cuddly fur baby. She loves coloring, vibrant long fingernails, and baking sweet treats for her neighbors.
